Return to Pescadero Marsh Natural Preserve

Where you can spend over three hours to walk a mile and a half.

On a recent gray day, Katherine and I drove up to Pescadero Marsh Natural Preserve. We were hoping to see the Bald Eagle we’d seen on previous visits. We were disappointed in that regard (and another photographer we spoke to said he hadn’t seen the Bald Eagle at the Marsh since June) but had an exciting time spotting herons!

We have seen Great Blue Herons (and their “cousins,” the Great and Snowy Egrets) at Pescadero Marsh every time we visit. On this trip were were excited to see first Black-crowned Night Herons (adults and juveniles) and then Green Herons! A Belted Kingfisher and Common Mergansers were also exciting sightings.

Common Mergansers. The white is an unusual color for this bird. (Merganser is a word I always mispronounce — and am always corrected by whomever I’m talking to. Emphasis on the “gan” — not “mer”)
